McMinn’s Birmingham Hip Resurfacing: after the operation

Gelenkzentrum Berlin | Hüftersatz, Kniegelenkersatz und Fußchirurgie

Day 1

Try to sit up in bed, and move your legs as shown to activate your circulation. Together with a physiotherapist, you will get out of bed in the morning and walk with a walker or crutches You will be shown exercises to do on your own and how to make use of your walker/crutches. You will be encouraged to put weight on the operated leg. If you get dizzy because your circulation is still not stable enough after surgery, do the exercises on the edge of the bed or in bed. To allow your incision to heal properly, do not bend the hip more than 90° and do turn it in inwards by more than 10°.

Day 2

The drains are removed from the incision and the dressing is changed. Almost all patients are able to stand up and walk at this point. We will ask you to walk longer distances today. If you feel up to it, you can also get up and walk independently if you like. The exercises are continued and increased. You should lie on your back with your hip fully extended once a day for about 30 minutes in order to stretch the hip muscles.

Day 3

Today, you’ll get another round of X-rays. A nurse will help you take a shower. The exercise programme is expanded, for example, with practice climbing stairs. Your gait will be judged and trained as needed. You will learn to use crutches.

from Day 4

You will participate in increasing levels of physical therapy exercises. The exercises are important for your leg muscles, promoting the healing process, and stabilising the prosthesis. You will be discharged usually on the sixth day after surgery. By this time, you should be able to walk safely with crutches and only use a small amount of painkillers. Together with social services, we will then discuss further outpatient or inpatient rehabilitation options.

Recommendations for the first two weeks

You should sit on firm chairs high enough off the floor to avoid excessive bending. When sitting down and standing up, place most of your body weight on the leg that was NOT operated on.

What should you avoid?

In the first two weeks as your incision is healing, do not cross your legs, bend over deeply, or squat.

Weeks 6 – 12

You should be walking longer distances, both flat and uphill surfaces.

Weeks 12 – 24

You can increase the weight you put on your new hip and do sport that allows you to place controlled weight loads on it. You should not yet do any sports where you could fall suddenly.
